The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office confirmed their deputies shot and killed a man in his driveway shortly after noon on Wednesday.
Sheriff Bill Prummel said the man had originally called 911 to remove someone off his property, but after deputies served him an outstanding warrant, he eventually charged at them.
Deputies said they responded to a disturbance between Elroy Clarke and Troy Johnson. Authorities determined the disturbance to be a civil matter.
Deputies said they discovered Clarke had an outstanding warrant for his arrest and that he refused to be arrested.
Authorities said they attempted numerous less-lethal measures to detain Clarke. They used a taser several times, a baton, and pepper spray to no avail. Three deputies went hands-on with him.
Prummell said that two deputies fired their firearms during the scene.
The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office said they plan to release the bodycam video after they review it.
Johnson is in custody as of Wednesday night. The two deputies who fired their weapons are on administrative leave.
